HARE Irrigation Project — Original Design and Modern Reassessment

In 1995, while completing Civil / Irrigation Engineering studies at Arba Minch Water Technology Institute, Mesfin Hagos Tewolde worked with Mitiku Bedru Gochefo, Seid Shimelis and Tamir Mitiku Habeteyes on the HARE Irrigation Project Design Report. The study required the team to integrate hydrology, crop-water requirements, irrigation planning, canal hydraulics, diversion works and hydraulic structures within one irrigation-development scheme.

Three decades later, he is leading a modern technical return to HARE using contemporary GIS and DEM workflows. The reassessment includes watershed and diversion-weir catchment delineation, drainage-network interpretation, command-area elevation and percent-slope analysis, spatial verification of the original project setting, and comparison of historical design assumptions with present-day geospatial evidence.

This work gives HARE a dual role in his professional record: it is both an early engineering design project and a current platform for demonstrating how engineering knowledge can be revisited, tested, clarified and passed forward using modern analytical tools.
